The Malden/Pope John Tigers made it on the scoreboard Thursday night scoring their first goal of the season against Medford.

The Tigers kept the Mustangs off of the scoreboard for much of the first period. Sophomore goal tender Andres Arredondo made 24 saves, only giving up five goals.

Pope John senior and Captain Mike DeRosa put the Tigers on the board at the second period buzzer.

Coach Joe DeRoeva is excited about the team’s first goal. Despite the 5-1 loss DeRoeva said he doesn’t care about the score board.

“They’re a good group of skaters – always upbeat and positive. That’s what makes me proud.”

DeRoeva was also happy to have one of two Pope John international students on the ice against Medford. The other players have supported them, he said. “And that’s great to see.”

The Tigers take the ice on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 6:10 p.m. at the Porrazzo Rink in East Boston.
